This motet bears witness to Brahms’ profound engagement with early music. As a philologist, Johannes Brahms himself participated in the edition of collected works and was an enthusiastic collector of music manuscripts and prints of music of earlier times. He masterfully integrated the compositional techniques thus handed down into his own body of works. O Heiland, reiß die Himmel auf (Oh Saviour, ope the heav’nly gates) is based on a chorale melody in the Dorian church mode that Brahms knew how to skillfully vary in the course of the five individual movements. The musical fracturing intensifies from a rather homophonic composition in the first verse to an elaborately conceived double canon by inversion in its final part.
