The basis of this Latin Mass Missa Da pacem, Domine is the hymn of the same name from the 9th century. Franz M. Herzog uses it in a variety of ways as a motif basis for all parts of the Mass. The Kyrie, with its naturally flowing counterpoint, is reminiscent of the Renaissance, while in large parts of the Gloria the rhythmic element predominates. In the Credo, Herzog combines different facets of expression: in the haunting Crucifixus, for example, the hammer blows of the crucifixion can be heard before the Credo comes to a powerful end. In the Sanctus, the juxtaposition of female and male voices reflects the angelic choirs of the cherubim and seraphim, before the Agnus Dei ends peace- and hopefully in accordance with the title of the Mass.
An exciting and rewarding work for dedicated amateur and chamber choirs, which musically impressively presents the repeatedly necessary plea for peace and which is an enrichment for both church services and concert performances.
