“For my setting of the Ave Maria, I took the style of the Nazarenes as a model. A group of enthusiastic young painters from Rome at the beginning of the 19th century oriented themselves to the Renaissance period, especially to Giotto, Raphael and his wife Angelico, walked barefoot and dressed in the manner of the apostles. New forms of religious expression were sought and in the picture composition sharply contoured figures in reverent draping were placed in front of a natural background in finely graded pastel shades from pink to sky blue. I liked this idea, and I looked for clearly modelled melodic figures to then immerse them musically in a transfigured, almost unearthly light.” (Thomas Thurnher)
