The collection Geistliche Chor-Music (Sacred choral music) of the Protestant composer Heinrich Schütz contains a full array of sacred motets in German. Schütz deliberately espouses the cause of traditional polyphonic composing which stands in contrast to the basso continuo compositions that became fashionable in the 17th century. The motet Gib unsern Fürsten (Give Our Princes) obviously bears witness also to his exemplary mastery of the contrapuntal motet style. Schütz used the motet Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich (Grant Us Merciful Peace) as the first part of this piece in his original edition. Accordingly, it would be appropriate to perform both pieces together.
