Friedrich Wilhelm Kücken, born in Bleckede near Lüneburg and son of an executioner by profession, was one of the most popular composers of his time. One can admire his expressive and easily singable melodies, the sensitive warmth and the versatile compositional technique in his monophonic and multi-part lieder. Kücken's Motet for Lent is characterised by propulsive melodies and rhythms, purposeful harmonies and the creative effects of dynamic contrasts. With its immediately captivating and effective musical rendering of the text, this choral piece Er ist um uns’rer Missetat willen verwundet (He was wounded for our transgressions) remains today an enrichment of every concert and every liturgical performance during Passiontide and Easter.
