Josef Suk studied violin and composition at the Prague Conservatory, where he held a master class from 1922. Antonín Dvořák, who later became his father-in-law taught him there from 1891 and promoted him until his death. As a violinist Suk performed with the Bohemian Quartet for 40 years and travelled throughout Europe. For mixed choir in 1900 he composed the outstanding Tři zpěvy/Drei Gesänge/Three Part Songs op. 19, in each of which a female role (seductress/mother/witch) is hauntingly linked with the death motif. The present edition contains the original Czech lyrics and new singable English and German lyrics.

  • Zavedený ovčák / Der getäuschte Schäfer / The Betrayed Shepherd
  • Mat‘ moja / Mutter mein' / Mother mine
  • Stasa čarodějnice / Die Hexe Stasa / Stasa the Witch
