The Finnish composer Toivo Kuula, a pupil of Jean Sibelius, was known mainly due to his extensive oeuvre for choirs and other vocal ensembles. The frequently used parallel thirds and the open fifths of the haunting elegiac lullaby Nuku (Sleep), composed in 1904, lends a heavy archaic, Nordic coloring. By means of an intense harmonic and rhythmic design of the sound fields Kuula has created a work which, driven by energetic dynamics and tempo fluctuations, leaves a tremendous emotional Impact on the listener. The present edition contains new singable English lyrics, too.
