Niels Wilhelm Gade is counted among the most important Danish composers of the 19th century. As one of the leading conductors of his day he conducted the Leipzig Gewandhaus concerts alongside and then succeeding Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Gade's friendship with him as well as with Robert Schumann shaped his œuvre, which, not least, is clearly evident in Im Herbste (In Autumn) from the Five Songs op.13, composed in the mid-1840s. Formally well-balanced, it is inspiring through its detailed text interpretation, its impressive changes between major and minor, and also through the soprano solo that strikingly spans the chorus in the second part of every verse.
