Ave maris stella is not only Grieg’s best-known choral work but also one of the most important works of Scandinavian choral music, and one which, because of its simple sensitivity and its expressive melodies and harmonies is popular with choirs throughout the world. Having originally composed it as a solo song to be sung in Danish, Grieg reworked it at the end of 1898 into a choral piece, at the same time deciding in favour of the Latin lyrics.
