The Speech of the Birds is loosely inspired by the renowned mystical poem Conference of the Birds by the Persian poet Fariduddin Attar (12th century). Just as the birds in the story hold a conference, the instruments of the Symphony orchestra convene here, with each one introduced individually. The piece is designed as an educational work to make the orchestra’s diversity and soundscape accessible to Young audiences. It is specifically tailored to be playable by skilled youth orchestras, offering as many players as possible the opportunity to take on small solo parts. One by one, the woodwinds, brass, and string instruments take centre stage, mirroring the way the birds in Attar’s poem interact with one another. (Mathias Rehfeldt)
