As one of the most unique pupils of Johann Sebastian Bach, the choirmaster of St. Thomas, Johann Gottfried Müthel represents as a pianist the leading figure in the Northern German “Sturm and Drang”. His works, giving valuable insight into the organ playing, organ composition and teaching practices of the second half of the 18th century belong among the most daring that had been composed between Bach’s and Beethoven’s time, an age in which originality above all was sought.
The two-volume complete edition of Müthel’s organ works, published in 1982 (volume 1) and 1985 (volume 2), is now available in a revised and extended new edition: the score has a new and attractive layout and the results of the most recent research have been incorporated in the preface. An English translation to each text is now included. Furthermore, volume 2 has been enhanced through the addition of two compositions. Numerous high-quality facsimiles make the editor’s decisions concerning the transcription of musical pieces handed down only as sketches comprehensible.
