In his sacred works, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy effectively linked archaising, polyphonic elements with the Romantic style of his age. Kept relatively simple technically, and therefore very well suited to the practicalities of church music, the choral piece Jauchzet dem Herrn, alle Welt (Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands – Psalm 100), which has remained popular to the present day, is filled with an atmosphere which is both festive and lyrical. By means of varying combinations of voices, and a middle section to be performed by a double quartet, Mendelssohn achieves subtly diversified tonal colours.
