Alphons Diepenbrock is numbered among the most important Dutch composers of the turn of the 20th century. More than 50 per cent of his total œuvre is devoted to vocal music, which was his lifelong preoccupation. His Chanson d'automne (Song of autumn) can be seen without any doubt as one of his most outstanding masterpieces for choir. Composed on the basis of a symbolist text by Paul Verlaine, it is, in its vivid melancholy, an exemplary reflection of fin-de-siècle atmosphere.
