‘What if…?’ Imagination and creativity in the primary English classroom

What if every English lesson could spark imagination and creativity? What if children could explore, imagine, and create while learning the language? And what if our role as teachers was not to provide the answers, but to help children imagine new possibilities? In this session, we’ll explore creative pedagogy and possibility thinking. Using ‘What if…?’ questions as our guide, we’ll examine simple, practical exercises and real projects that allow children to engage their creativity, using examples from HELBLING’s primary series MARBLES.

Sarah Hillyard (MA, University of York) is an ELT consultant, teacher trainer, and author specializing in young learners. She has extensive experience in pre-primary education, including work in Argentina and with NILE. Sarah develops courses and writes materials for pre-primary maths, primary CLIL, STEAM, and general ELT.

More than just a skill: Help students grow with reading

What if every English lesson could spark imagination and creativity? What if children could explore, imagine, and create while learning the language? And what if our role as teachers was not to provide the answers, but to

Every teacher dreams of students discovering a love for reading. But what if we told you that reading is much more than just a skill to be taught? With reading, we get to develop a whole set of skills as well as grow culturally and emotionally. Reading shapes who we are and what we know about language. In this session, we’ll explore how the latest titles from HELBLING Readers Classics series can be integrated into your coursework, accommodating all learning interests and teaching goals. We’ll gradually move from classroom-based tasks towards bigger reading projects to see how each approach helps students develop different skills and knowledge sets.

Nóra Wünsch-Nagy, PhD in Applied Linguistics/TESOL, is an assistant professor of English Applied Linguistics. She has extensive experience teaching English at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Her research interests include multimodality, social semiotics, genre-based pedagogy, and language/literacy education, with a special focus on visual narratives.

Finding relevance and meaning in language learning

In today’s fast-paced world, where it is increasingly challenging to stay focused on any one task, clear progression in one’s language learning journey can sometimes feel unachievable. How do we help our students feel they are getting the support they need in order to progress to the next step? In this talk, we will discuss the benefits of differentiation in the language classroom where graded versions of text and audio material can give students the challenge and the support they need both within and outside of their classroom environment. We will focus on how providing targeted scaffolding in mixed ability classrooms can help set clearer individual language goals and make the material more relevant and meaningful to all students, using examples from HELBLING’s new coursebook for teenagers: American OPTIONS.

Anna Whitcher is an independent writer, editor and video producer with over 25 years of experience in ELT. Together with her company, ELT ImageMakers, she helps educational publishers bring their content to life with her creativity and effective project management.
