The highly popular repertoire piece Exsultate, justi, with its characteristic alternation of odd and even metre and a number of expressive melismas was already a great success in Viadana's lifetime, and is presented now in a new edition in which a figured bass (ad lib) is set out. Viadana wanted to create a work which small ensembles would find easy to sing, and achieved this goal by taking care that the lyrics could be easily understood and favouring a simple, predominantly chordal style.
