This Salve regina in B flat major D386 from the year 1816, the fourth of a total of seven settings of the text, shows very clearly the subtle differentiation and inner empathy with which Schubert approached the underlying text for even the smaller examples among his works designed for liturgical use. Dispensing with imitations completely, he works principally with harmonic means to arrive at a musical interpretation of the text. This moving choral piece is full of lyrical warmth, which gives sensitive musical expression to Mary’s compassion, while still not in any way lacking its moments of expressive melancholy, especially in its representation of grieving humanity on Earth.
