This piece is a musical reflection on Psalm 22 – one of the most powerful laments in the Bible. The text begins in utter despair and gradually moves through a struggle with God toward a fragile sense of hope. The piece was originally composed for the Synodal Assembly of the Catholic Church in Frankfurt, where it received its premiere. It is closely tied to the theme of addressing sexual abuse within the Church. The music seeks to give space to the unspeakable: pain, silence, and the feeling of being abandoned – by people, by the institution, by God. At the same time, Psalm 22 carries a quiet shift toward trust – not as an easy reconciliation, but as the possibility that lament might be heard. This tension also shapes the musical structure.” (Mathias Rehfeldt)
