The work Three Inventions for piano, performed for the first time in 1981 by professor Roman Ortner in Vienna, is actually Richard Dünser’s op. 1. It takes its inspiration from the traditional contrapuntal techniques between Bach and Bartók, but offers its own fascinating compositional approaches against a background of free tonality. The rhythmic independence, the emphatic musical line management, and the motivic and thematic consistency create a forcefulness in which Dünser’s ingenuity come to full maturity. Thus, the curious listener is rewarded with several precious jewels of contrapuntal artistry.
