In 1914 Edward Elgar published The Fountain as part of his opus 71. Born in the West Midlands of England, the composer, who is best known for his unforgettable melody from Pomp and Circumstance, moved to London a few years previously. In the capital city Elgar longed to be back in the tranquility of nature that he knew from his former home. Thus, The Fountain is a declaration of love for just that silence that is only broken through the whispering of a spring. Here, Elgar has set the verses of the Welsh lyricist Henry Vaughan in oscillating timbres. The love of nature, its only apparent simplicity and the intensity of its onomatopoetic expression secure this piece a firm place in the repertoire of late-Romantic choral music.
