Charles Villiers Stanford is a central figure in the musical history of Ireland and England, whose work has been increasingly rediscovered since the 1980s. He was educated in Cambridge, Leipzig and Berlin, and vocal music plays a substantial role in his creative work. Himself director of the London Bach Choir, he created impressive choral works in the spirit of the Romantic choral tradition. Picking up on German models, he developed a choral musical language of his own, which reveals itself in exemplary fashion in The Blue Bird. Playing with subtle musical imagery, this choral piece is an outstanding example of his skill. Stanford lends a tremendously idyllic, almost soaring atmosphere to the peace on the shores of a lake, which is interrupted only briefly by the passage of a bird.
