This song, which is actually a solo, is taken from the third act of Richard Wagner's opera Tannhäuser. Wolfram (baritone) loves Elizabeth from the bottom of his heart. From the content of the song we learn that he has a premonition of her approaching death. This premonition becomes reality, and the opera ends with the procession of mourners to her funeral. Gwyn Arch has taken Wagner's haunting melody and created a sensitive choral arrangement which will be a rewarding item in the programme of any choral concert.
