With the choral piece Gott b'hüte dich, desgleich mich (May God protect you and protect me, too), which Leonhard Lechner composed in the second half of the 16th century, he was in keeping with the trend of his time: the strophic construction, the predominantly homophonically structured composition and the conception for four voices remind the listener of the folkloric genre of the villanella that was very popular in Italy and which quickly gained many followers north of the Alps. Lechner's composition presents itself as a sung farewell and blessing in simple but effective musical packaging.
