Born in Königsberg (present-day Kaliningrad) and given his musical training in Berlin, the composer Hermann Goetz spent the greater part of his brief period of musical creativity in Switzerland, where, as a choral director, organist, music critic and music teacher he made a rich contribution to the musical life of Winterthur, Basle and Zurich. Dying at an early age, he was able to create only a slender œuvre, but one of outstanding quality. His choral piece Er ist's (Spring is come), a well-knit musical gem, dazzlingly rich in harmony and melody, is a true stroke of genius of his early years. Rendered in highly subtle musical imagery, the music reflects each individual group of words of Eduard Mörike's poem.
