Dixit Maria ad Angelum is one of the best known motets by Hans Leo Hassler, one of the most respected composers of his times. Although it is heavily influenced by the musical culture of Italy, the structure of this choral piece is imitative and contrapuntal, following the style of Orlando di Lasso and Leonhard Lechner. Its bel canto flowing, independently led voices give rise to a gentle, balanced impression.
