This impressive Ave maris stella by Franz M. Herzog, arranged in cyclical form and eymbolising eternity, was commissioned as part of the styria cantat 2 project of the Styrian Singers Association, and won 2nd prize in the 2010 international Golden Tuning Fork competition for composers.

The sea gains its symbolism from the vast expanses and depths of its masses of water. It is fed by innumerable rivers, which, in their turn, are gradually swollen to their full volume by their many tributaries. The sea consists of a sole element, water, which, like a single organism is constantly in motion, sometimes powerfully, sometimes less so. The soul of humankind, which senses the fullness of life within itself, recognizes in the sea a fitting symbol of its own emotions. (Franz M. Herzog)
