Franz M. Herzog's treatment of the Christmas carol Es wird scho glei dumpa (When Darkness is Falling), well known throughout the Alpine region, may be unconventional, but is enormously atmospheric. Above the surging expanses of sound of the lower voices, the drawn out soprano melody rings out in 4/4 time, spherically completely transported, and in addition harmonically estranged. The middle section is in familiar 3/4 time. An effective arrangement with German and English lyrics.
