Orlando di Lasso is one of the most universal and prolific composers of the 16th century, and was at home in all of the styles and genres of this times. Among the most popular pieces that he created were, even during his lifetime, his four-voice “villanelle”, compositions with a deliberate folk character in various Italian dialects. The great popularity of these pieces results from the broadly homophonic structure, the folk style of the melodies and the rapid switches between duple and triple time, combined with humorous lyrics full of double entendre and innuendo. All of this can be found in Tutto lo dì (All day long you say) in accomplished form.
