Death, pain, guilt and atonement are themes which the deeply religious renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo dealt with at length in his creative work. Dissonances heavy with tension and chromatically progressing melodic lines shape the melancholy character of this motet. The polyphonic structure reveals Carlo Gesualdo’s excellent knowledge of the traditions of Dutch vocal music. As a representative example of his sacred music, the motet impresses with its musical beauty and expressive power. The text, its musical rendering and the heaviness of the composition convey only a mere suspicion of the fateful biographical history of this illustrious composer.
