All his life, the church music was close to the heart of Arnold Mendelssohn, only distantly related with Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. He clearly pledged himself to Heinrich Schütz’s vocal music – a technically convincing polyphonic compositional structure that at the same time is invariably dedicated to serving the rendered word. Schütz had already set to music the text of Christ’s suffering on the Cross two hundred years earlier. The Baroque doctrine of figures and compositional technique are at the same time merely the outward manifestation of Arnold Mendelssohn’s struggle concerning the character of authentic church music. The obvious orientation to historic role models in conjunction with his forward-looking sound language rendered him a significant trailblazer of modern sacred choral music.
