The onomatopoeic and narrative character of Maurice Ravel’s Nicolette is reminiscent of the programmatic chansons of the French Renaissance composer Clément Janequin. The piece, for which Ravel himself wrote the lyrics, depicts in four verses rich in contrasts and variation, a walk taken by Nicolette, and uses musical means to portray her encounters on this walk. The dynamic structure of the composition enables the performing choir to bring out musical details to great effect. With Nicolette, Ravel has created, with rapid brush strokes in the colours of the Renaissance, a richly varied and entertaining miniature for a-cappella choirs.
