The part books of the Latin motet Martia terque quater have been kept in the Chamber of Art and Wonders at Ambras Castle near Innsbruck since the 16th century. The motet was destined to welcome Emperor Charles V., when he returned from Italy, and praises him as a peacemaker. The motet is characterized by a full sound, a concise declamation with insistent tenor repetition, diatonic parts, and simple and powerful chords. The composer applied the canonic technique, and in order to obtain the desired varietas he introduced various forms of imitation.
