Today, Antonio Soler is known in particular for his outstanding piano works, which are reminiscent of Domenico Scartlatti. That this composer, who worked in the monastery of Madrid and the San Lorenzo de El Escorial cultural centre also created exceptional choral music is demonstrated by his Laudate, pueri, Dominum. Bubbling over with verve and spirit as a consequence of the numerous sixteenths and dotted rhythms, this work of the early classical period is characterised by jaunty imitations, melodies urging ever forward and purposeful harmonies. Particularly appealing is the diversity within the structure of the choral setting, which is given relief by passages performed solistically by the soprano, bass or alto in duet with the tenor.
