The music of the early 17th century was, without a doubt, influenced the Italians. But also in Leipzig the musicians were up to date in contemporary musical developments: Johann Heinrich Schein published his collection Israels Brünnlein (Font of Israel) here in 1623. Given the multilayered design of the composition, just as is also exhibited in the sacred madrigal Ich bin die Wurzel des Geschlechtes David (I am the root and the offspring of David), one could imagine being transported to Saint Mark's Square in Venice. Schein succeeds masterfully in blending the Italian stile nuovo with the traditional contrapuntal style. This madrigal is a representative witness of early Baroque compositional artistry of Lutheran influence.
