Born in Walderbach in the Upper Palatinate, Johann Jakob Kress – a respected composer, violinist, chamber musician and concert master – worked in a multifaceted manner at the Darmstadt court, which after 1700 the music-loving Prince Ernst Ludwig developed into a cultural centre. In Kress's compositional work, the violin was the main instrument; but he also wrote several works for recorder.

Clear structures, immediately catchy melodies and virtuoso joy of playing characterize his sonatas for treble recorder and basso continuo. Their great popularity is also reflected in the fact that some of them have been wrongly attributed to well-known composers such as George Frideric Handel. All sonatas are ideally suited for concerts and lessons and enrich not only the repertoire for treble recorder, but also that for violin, flute or oboe – because Kress's rousing music can also be played very well on these instruments. This new edition contains an informative preface as well as helpful interpretation hints.
