Johann van der Sandt

Johann van der Sandt studied music at the University of Pretoria (South Africa) and subsequently specialised in choral conducting at the former Instituut voor Dirigenten Educatie in the Netherlands. He is internationally active as a conductor, educator, composer and adjudicator, and is regularly invited to festivals, competitions and symposia.

Van der Sandt has worked with numerous ensembles, ranging from children’s and youth choirs to professional vocal ensembles. As conductor of the University of Pretoria Camerata, he led the choir to several international awards. He later served as Music Director at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School.

Today, he is Professor of Musicology and Music Education at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. His current conducting activities include the South Tyrol Youth Choir, the South Tyrolean Vocal Ensemble, the male choir Brummnet, and the university ensemble unibzVoices.
