This four-voice Stabat mater, a musical jewel from Spain’s “Siglo de Oro”, the golden century, is characterised by an original treatment of the contrapuntal style. The independently and linearly led parts give rise to expressive, chromatic phrases which vividly convey Mary’s grief. The creator of the work, Gutiérrez de Padilla, is one of those Renaissance composers who were active in the country’s overseas colonies and who have only recently been discovered. Born in Málaga, at the prime of his life he worked with great success for over forty years at the cathedral in the Mexican city of Puebla.
