On the whole, spirituals tend to fall into two categories. There are the ‘sorrow songs’, intensely moving and slow (Sometimes I feel like a motherless child; Were you there when they crucified my Lord?), or the exciting, rhythmic, optimistic ones with their promises of heaven (I stood on the River of Jordan; Old Grey Robe; Ride the Chariot).
