This composition by Yannick Wittmann depicts the many facets of the eponymous poem by Georg Heym (1887–1912, The City) about life in the city. After an introduction to the nocturnal scenery a more peaceful, harmonious look in the “thousand blinking windows” of the streets follows, till the perspective changes to the people who make their way to work by the setting moon. Monotony and apathy are expressed through the repetitive figures as well as through imitative themes. Interfering noise, like the inserted whistling, creates the background noise that cannot be escaped in the pulsing metropolis. Edition in German.
