In 1848 Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy published with his op. 79 six proverbs for the church year. He took his texts from the “Prussian Agenda” of 1829 which had a long lasting effect on the Evangelical liturgy in the Prussian churches of the time. Also for the church music compositions by Mendelssohn, who as choral director was responsible for church music at the Berlin Cathedral, it does not remain without influence. Corresponding to the prevailing ideals, works were conceived that orientated on the a cappella style of the 16th century. The two choral compositions Im Advent (In Advent) and Weihnachten (Christmas) are showcased as acoustically powerful hymns of rejoicing at Christmastime.
