Johannes Brahms dealt artistically with the folksong genre his whole life. He thereby participated extensively in a groundbreaking movement for the literature and music of the Romantic era that beginning with Johann Gottfried Herder considered the folksong a symbol of unspoiled nature. Brahms strove to create from these songs fully valid works of art while maintaining their simplicity and originality. This handling of folk music in the current arrangement of the song Wach auf, meins Herzens Schöne (Awake, oh beauty of my heart) is reflected sublimely. In an unconstrained manner Brahms incorporates compositional-technical subtleties whereby an artistic miniature results that does justice to the character of the folk song at the same time.
