This motet, based on Martin Luther’s text, was published by the Protestant composer Heinrich Schütz in 1648 towards the end of the Thirty Years’ War. The piece, composed in a contrapuntal motet style is, at the same time, a musical plea for the long sought-after peace. In his original edition Schütz added the motet Gib unsern Fürsten (Give Our Princes) as the second part ahead of this composition. Accordingly, it would be appropriate to perform both pieces together.
