Blagoje Bersa ranks among the most important music personalities of the first third of the 20th century in Croatia. He established musical modernity in his homeland and strived to develop a traditional Croatian musical language his whole life. In Mjesečina (Moonlight) which opens the important three-part cycle Tri pejzaža (Three Landscapes) Bersa has the choir hum all the way through – apart from several passages where the vowel ah is sung. The voices thus become instruments that present absolute music. The Impressionistic, very individual musical language induces a mysterious, poetical atmosphere of great intensity. Blagoje Bersa succeeds with Mjesečina in composing a masterpiece of a cappella choral music to great effect.
