The 122th psalm, Laetatus sum is a song of pilgrimage sung in praise of the holy city of Jerusalem. As an element in the vespers of the Blessed Virgin it served numerous composers as a basis for their work. The Protestant musician Melchior Franck, whose work was part of the transition from high renaissance to the early baroque period, was also one who set this Psalm of David to music. His composition is oriented towards the double-choir structure of the Italian masters, which enjoyed great popularity north of the Alps as well. The motet breathes the joyful mood of anticipation present in the text, a mood given expression from the very beginning by the cheerful character of the triple metre.
