Christus factus est, which is part of the Holy Week liturgy (Holy Thursday) portrays Christ's crucifixion. Anton Bruckner set the text of this gradual several times. The version composed in 1884 counts among his most poignant vocal compositions and bears witness to the deep piety of this composer. In melodic and dynamic extremes Bruckner depicts the contrast between the humiliation that the Son of God experiences on the Cross and the exaltation that is thus bestowed on him.
