Jules Massenet, "King" of the Parisian opera stage until his death in 1912, left an amazingly comprehensive substantial œuvre behind. His special ability to create catchy and pleasing melodies proved advantageous in his monophonic and polyphonic part songs. This is apparent in the cycle Chansons des Bois d'Amaranthe which, in an atmospheric and effective manner reflects outgoing French Romanticism. Number 5 from the collection, Chantez! (Sing!), is distinguished by interplay between soloistic parts and homophonic choral progressions rich in variety while a lively piano accompaniment drives the musical events forward. No one can resist this gripping invitation to sing!
