The Englishman William Bird is considered the Palestrina of Great Britain and worked as an organist and composer under Queen Elizabeth I in London. His Ave verum corpus is one of the most famous settings of this medieval hymn next to that of the famous composer, Mozart. The piece, published in 1605 is marked by the especially heartfelt character that surfaces in sensitive homophonic passages and flowing cantabile melismas.
