The motet Virga Jesse may be considered a model for the a cappella style in Anton Bruckner’s choral music repertoire which above all lives from great extremes: The piece passes through an entire spectrum of dynamic nuances in effective crescendo lines; the tonal range of the individual voices are used to their limits and the harmonic progressions flow in a rapid change throughout the generously measured tonal space. This Marian part song textually based on Isaiah’s prophesies requires of the performers a high degree of concentration, sensitivity and reactivity. However, it recompenses owing to its emphatic intensity and it stands for nothing less than the embodiment of Romantic church music.
