At the beginning of 1882 Antonín Dvořák wrote a choral cycle for mixed voices. In this five a cappella movements Dvořák set texts by the poet Vítězslav Hálek to music. In the second piece of the cycle, Večerní les rozvázal zvonky (The Evening Bell Sounds in the Grove), the idyll of the forest in evening is depicted: Beside the call of the cuckoo and the song of the nightingale, the ringing of the evening bells can be heard in the distance. With his predominantly homophonic construction and thanks to his effective harmony Dvorak's simple portrayal of nature is romantic choral music at its finest. With Czech, English (Vespertine woods let the bells tinkle) and German lyrics (Im Haine hört das Abendläuten).
