Gregor Aichinger documented the turning point from the Renaissance to early Baroque with his musical œuvre. Originally from Regensburg, the composer’s main place of residence became Augsburg of the time of the Fuggers. This rich merchant and patrician family actively supported him, and he maintained many longstanding friendships with numerous of their family members. As an ordained priest he advocated the Catholic Faith in a time of religious wars from which not least his numerous settings of Marian hymns bear witness to this. Regina coeli solemnizes Mary as the Queen of Heaven and Mother of the risen Christ. The four-part composition expresses that Easter joy by means of the exuberant character of the triple meter which permeates the piece in specific sections. Aichinger displays his familiarity with the classical vocal style of the Renaissance with playful ease.
